Launch of Freelance Fridays initiative within 'Black Box Studio' development
Rubicon Dance has announced its intention to develop a ‘black box studio’ alongside a new a ‘Freelance Fridays’ offer that will provide free development space for unfunded artists.
The oldest community dance organisation in Wales, Rubicon Dance, has announced its intention to develop a ‘black box studio’ within its base in Adamsdown, Cardiff, alongside a new commitment to support the Welsh dance ecology through a ‘Freelance Fridays’ offer that will provide free development space for unfunded artists.
This marks a bold next step in the charity’s commitment to the dance sector – a plan to transform one of its main studios into an open-access rehearsal and performance space. Under the new initiative, Rubicon Dance will make free studio space available for dance artists working on unfunded research and development projects on any Fridays that the studio is not in use.
The organisation’s chief executive, Simon Morris, commented, “Our Freelance Fridays scheme is intended to open up meaningful access for independent dance-makers. The offer is simple and trust-based – we want to support R&D and the workshopping stages of project development which can be really tough to finance, especially for early-career artists.”
Rubicon Dance is also aiming to redevelop its existing studio space with better technical equipment to provide greater flexibility and a more creative environment for experimentation, rehearsals, and small-scale performances, with the needs of artists front and centre. To ignite this renovation, the organisation is seeking sponsorship and partnership support from businesses and individuals who share its belief in the positive impact the arts can make on community wellbeing and local economies.
